IMPORTANCE OF ASTM STANDARDS
(and why our principal is an active member of ASTM International)

ASTM's cement and concrete standards are instrumental in the evaluation and testing of concrete, cement, and aggregates. Concrete can have different properties depending upon the mixture that is used in creating it, which contains cement, chemical admixtures, and aggregates. These ingredients are mixed with water to create concrete which is used as a primary construction material in buildings. These cement and concrete standards allow laboratories all over the world to test and evaluate concrete mixtures to ensure their strength and safety. These standards help to identify the various properties of concrete including strength, elasticity, hardness, and workability.

ASTM's paint and related coating standards are instrumental in specifying and evaluating the physical and chemical properties of various paints and coatings that are applied to certain bulk materials to improve their surface properties. Guides are also provided for the proper methods of applying these coatings, which also include enamels, varnishes, electroplatings, pigments, and solvents. These paint and related coating standards help paint manufacturers and end-users in the appropriate testing and application procedures for the coating of their concern.

ASTM's resilient floor covering standards are instrumental in specifying and testing the physical and mechanical properties, as well as in providing the installation procedures for resilient flooring, which includes linoleum, vinyl composition tile, and sheet vinyl among others. These standards help to determine the abrasion, puncture, and impact resistance, flexibility, electrical resistance, thickness, and heat and light stability. These resilient floor covering standards also allow product manufacturers, construction companies, and all other producers and users of resilient flooring materials to test floor coverings to ensure strength and quality towards safe utilization.
